This takes it out of your hands, and makes it look like you have no plan. I feel like that is what is making the polo shirt so bland looking.
Possible alternatives, I am assuming are to leave the pocket unblocked, but to sew it to the inside of the collar, instead of on top of it. This could turn into a collared polo.. but it depends on how the pockets are sewn.
I like the idea of keeping it simple, just putting a pocket in. I also like your ideas for polo's with your shirt under it. The idea of being able to wear a nice shirt in the summer with a polo shirt is enticing, but polos work fine in the winter as well and they don't require you to buy two separate shirts.
Dealing with hem-line shifting is a pain, but I agree that plain collars would help a lot in this situation. But it looks like the designer of the current clothes has already solved this issue by adding collars to most of their outfits.
For some reason, I think that there will always be people that want to wear a polo shirt. And, they won't all want a plain, simple polo. But, I don't think that it would be a bad thing to drop the shirt down so that the collar is exposed.
I'm not sure. I think it is a matter of how you would like to present yourself. I like plain collars on my plain clothes. Then again, I'm not looking at fashion magazines.
Perhaps I'm not expressing this well. I mean, my point is that the collar style is a part of the way that clothes are made, and that, the collar style in clothes is a very subtle way of conveying the identity of the person wearing it.
